Overview

Utrecht University is a research university (wo) in Utrecht. The Dutch register (DUO) lists 130 recognised programmes at the institution — 46 bachelor’s, 82 master’s, 2 post-initial master’s — of which 39 are taught in English.

“Enrolments” is DUO’s count of enrolments in this institution’s registered programmes — one student enrolled in two programmes counts twice, so it is not a count of students.

Tuition

Not published in the register

EU/EEA students pay the statutory tuition fee set by the Dutch government; students from outside the EU/EEA pay an institutional fee set by each university. Neither is part of the DUO register, so confirm the fee for your programme with UU. How Dutch tuition fees work.

Application Guides How to Apply to a Dutch University: Studielink, Deadlines and What Comes After Most applications run through Studielink, with 1 May as the general deadline and 15 January for numerus fixus programmes. Rankings & Comparisons Research University or University of Applied Sciences? WO and HBO Explained Dutch higher education has two main routes, WO and HBO, and the difference is in how the degree is taught, not in how good it is. Application Guides English-Taught or Dutch-Taught? How to Read the Language Column The register records the language of instruction for many programmes but not all, so check the programme page before you plan around it.

Admission requirements

Bachelor’s programmes at research universities (WO) require a VWO diploma or a recognised equivalent; universities of applied sciences (HBO) accept HAVO, VWO or MBO level 4 diplomas or equivalents. International applicants are assessed on the equivalent of their own secondary qualification, and some programmes ask for specific subjects such as mathematics. Programmes with a fixed number of places (numerus fixus) select applicants by their own procedure and deadline. Master’s programmes normally require a relevant bachelor’s degree and often a motivation letter, CV and sometimes a test or interview.

Language: Programmes taught in English require proof of English proficiency. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is a common standard for bachelor’s programmes and 6.5–7.0 for many master’s programmes; TOEFL iBT and Cambridge C1 Advanced are widely accepted as equivalents. Programmes taught in Dutch require proof of Dutch, usually the NT2 exam, Programme II. Each institution publishes its own thresholds.

How to apply

  1. 1Choose a programme from the register and check its language of instruction, study form (full-time, part-time or dual) and start month — most programmes start in September, some also in February.
  2. 2Confirm you meet the entry requirements: Bachelor’s programmes at research universities (WO) require a VWO diploma or a recognised equivalent; universities of applied sciences (HBO) accept HAVO, VWO or MBO level 4 diplomas or equivalents.
  3. 3Meet the language requirement: Programmes taught in English require proof of English proficiency.
  4. 4Apply through Studielink, the national enrolment system, plus any application the programme requires directly — deadlines differ by programme and many are earlier for students from outside the EU/EEA.
  5. 5Students from outside the EU/EEA normally need a residence permit (and an MVV entry visa where required) that the institution arranges with the IND. Arrange Dutch health insurance and housing as early as you can.

For international students

Applications go through Studielink, the national enrolment system, alongside any application the institution itself requires. Students from outside the EU/EEA normally need a residence permit, which the institution arranges with the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND), and must show sufficient means of support; EU/EEA students need no permit but must register with the municipality. A Dutch basic health insurance is compulsory for most students. Non-EU students may work limited hours during term time with an employer-held work permit, and graduates can apply for a residence permit as a highly educated person (orientation year) to look for work in the Netherlands.
